The Dongespoorbrug dates from 1886. The swing bridge was part of the “Bosch lijntje”, also called “De Langstraatspoorlijn” or “Halve Zolenlijn”, a railway track of 46 kilometres from Lage Zwaluwe to ‘s‑Hertogenbosch. This track consisted of seven railway stations and 40 train guard posts.

In the Second World War, the bridge was heavily damaged, but after 1945 the bridge was restored and regained its function. However, because of the rising automobile traffic, in 1950 the passenger transport was terminated. Only for freight transport, the railway remained in use till 1972. Ever since then, the bridge is in decay.

About 600 meters from here, the former railway station of Geertruidenberg was situated. However, hardly anything is left from this imposing building. The station was that big, because Geertruidenberg had a military function as a garrison town.

Only the names Spoorstraat, Spoorpark and Stationsweg still refer to the former place of this station. In the near future, a walking path will be realised from this bridge towards the former location of the station.
