The bridge has a unique construction. Originally, the bridge consisted of three parts: two fixed parts and one swing bridge. Only two parts remained. After a ship collided with the middle part, one of the fixed bridges was so heavily damaged, that it had to be removed. Nowadays, only pleasure crafts are allowed to pass under the bridge.
The swing bridge rests on a massif round pier. From the very beginning, this swing bridge had two tracks, to keep the balance, whereas the fixed bridges were built for only one track. The second track was never built. Since 1972 the railway track is out of use.
The bridge, dating from the end of the nineteenth century, was made of wrought steel and in rivet technic. Both fixed bridges and the swing bridge are truss bridges. The fixed bridges measured each 30.90 m. The swing bridge has a length of 34.30 m.
The bridge rests on two abutment piers and two piers, the swing part on a pivot pier, all in bricks. From the beginning, the piers were made for two railway tracks
